How a retaining wall
is actually built.

Before you dig: the stop rules

The seven steps

Steps 3 and 5 are the ones that fail walls. Everything else is stacking.

Lay out and check the load

Mark the line, measure the true height from the bottom of the base to the top of the cap, and apply the stop rules above before anything else.

Dig the base trench

Below grade far enough to bury a full course, plus six inches or more for stone. Wider than the block, so the base extends behind and in front.

Build and compact the base

Dense-graded stone, compacted in lifts until it stops moving, leveled precisely. Every course above copies this one — including its mistakes.

Set the base course

Level every unit front-to-back and side-to-side. This course takes the longest and decides whether the finished wall reads straight from the street.

Drain behind the wall

Perforated pipe at the base, clean angular stone around it, geotextile between stone and soil, and an outlet that daylights. Skip this and the wall is on a timer.

Stack with batter, backfill as you go

Engage the lip or pins so each course leans back. Backfill with clean stone and compact behind every course as you rise, never all at once at the end.

Cap and grade above

Adhesive on the caps, then grade the soil above so water sheds away from the wall instead of into the backfill you just built.

Why sandy Ocean County soil changes the math

Coastal sand drains fast, which sounds like it helps a retaining wall — and it does, right up until a storm saturates everything at once. Sand also offers less bearing resistance than clay, so base trenches here often go deeper than a generic instruction sheet says. Near the lagoons in Brick, Bayville and Forked River, seasonal high water tables mean the drainage layer is not optional at any height.

Retaining wall questions

How tall can a retaining wall be before it needs an engineer?
In most New Jersey municipalities, walls over four feet from the bottom of the base to the top of the cap need engineered drawings and a permit — and any wall of any height carrying a surcharge (a driveway, pool, or slope above it) needs engineering regardless. That threshold is not paperwork for its own sake: a four-foot wall is holding back several tons of saturated soil.
Why do retaining walls fail?
Water, almost every time. Either there is no drainage behind the wall, or the base course was set on topsoil instead of compacted stone. Both look perfect the day the job finishes and both fail somewhere around year three, when saturated soil pushes on a wall that has nowhere to send the water and nothing solid underneath it.
How deep does the base of a retaining wall go?
A common rule is one inch of buried block for every eight inches of wall height, with a minimum of one full course below grade, sitting on six inches or more of compacted dense-graded stone. In sandy Ocean County soil we often go deeper — the sand drains beautifully but offers less bearing resistance than clay.
Can I build a small garden wall myself?
A one- or two-course garden or seating wall under about two feet, with no slope or structure above it, is a reasonable weekend project if you dig a proper trench, use compacted stone, and keep it level. Above that, or anywhere water collects, the failure modes get expensive fast.
What is batter, and why does it matter?
Batter is the backward lean built into the wall as it rises — each course set slightly behind the one below. It uses the weight of the wall and the soil to work against the pressure pushing out. Engineered block systems build it in with a lip or pin; ignoring it is a slow-motion failure.
What does a retaining wall cost?
