What a paver driveway
actually costs.
A driveway is a patio that holds a car. That one difference is where most of the money goes — and where most cheap quotes cut. Here's what actually drives the number.

What moves a driveway quote
Same five factors as a patio, weighted completely differently.
01Base depth and thickness
This is most of the cost difference between a driveway and a patio of the same size. Vehicle loads mean deeper excavation and a thicker compacted stone section, built in tighter lifts. Skip it and the driveway ruts where the tires track — usually within two winters.
02Tear-out of what is there
Removing and hauling old asphalt or a concrete slab is real machine time and real dump fees. It is a separate line on our estimates so you can see it clearly.
03Full field or apron
A full paver driveway and a paver apron with border around existing asphalt are two very different budgets. If your asphalt still has life, the apron gets you most of the curb appeal for a fraction of the number.
04Paver line and pattern
Driveway-rated units cost more than patio pavers, and load-spreading patterns like herringbone take longer to lay than a running bond. Both are worth it under a car.
05Grade and drainage
Where does water go once the driveway sheds it? Pitch, drains, and any regrading at the apron or garage entry are part of building it right, and they are part of the price.
